## Emplacement
Saint-Jorioz is a commune in Haute-Savoie, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, about ten kilometers south of Annecy. The commune's 21 km² territory is partly mid- and high-mountain, bordered to the west by the Semnoz massif, which rises to an altitude of 1,660 m, and to the east by the western shore of Lake Annecy (443 m altitude). Inhabited since Neolithic times, with remains of lakeside villages unearthed in the 1980s, the site was crossed by a Roman road in Antiquity, but the first village did not really develop until the 9th century, with the installation of a priory.
Made up of numerous hamlets, Saint-Jorioz used to live from agriculture and fishing, but became industrialized with the establishment of tile factories, which did not cease operations until 1953. In the meantime, Saint-Jorioz, which had belonged to the Duchy of Savoy, became part of France in 1860. The proximity of Annecy and the development of tourism linked to the lake and surrounding winter sports resorts in the second half of the 20th century boosted the demographics of the commune, which today has almost 6,000 inhabitants. Its beach, port and leisure activities, combined with its unspoilt environment, make Saint-Jorioz, which belongs to the Parc Naturel Régional du Massif des Bauges, a popular stopover and holiday destination.
